The Giving Tree Band, an eight-man indie folk rock act out of Chicago, spent most of 2010 touring in support of their latest release, The Joke, The Threat, and The Obvious, hitting the major venues and festivals from SXSW and Wakarusa to The Kennedy Center and the House of Blues. With the album named to Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s “Top 10 Acoustic Albums of 2010,” The Giving Tree Band is folk rock in its truest sense. Somehow managing to make “old-timey” sound modern, it’s the jingle-jangley twang of a Nashville Skyline-era Dylan or The Band, often paired with the harmonies of The Birds or Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It’s timeless, toe-tapping music that has survived the ages for a reason.
The Giving Tree Band has also been recognized internationally for their environmental efforts. Named “the greenest band in the land” by Mother Nature News, their second album, 2009’s Great Possessions was recorded with 100% solar power while the band camped nearby and biked to the studio. Many of their instruments are crafted from fallen trees and reclaimed wood, their CD packaging is done with 100% recyclable materials, and they tour in a biodiesel van. Gotta love that.
