Words of Thanks and Gratitude from the DMMC

Over six years ago, a group of like minded music fans, promoters, venue owners, musicians and community members came together to form the non-profit, Greater Des Moines Music Coalition (DMMC). Our mission: “to aggressively advocate, sponsor, and develop an independent, progressive live music economy in greater Des Moines for the purpose of urban revitalization, regional economic development, and the retention of our region’s youth and future.” We’ve worked towards this goal through events like Music University, Little Big Fest, Gross Domestic Product, Concert Corps, and a variety of advocacy efforts.

In 2008 the DMMC took the bold step of launching 80/35, as a completely all volunteer organized music festival. Support from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines and the City of Des Moines were fundamental to the start of the festival. As the event has progressed into its fourth year, we continue to rely on the financial support of our partner sponsors including U.S. Cellular, Wellmark, Kum & Go, Meredith, Principal and more. Please view the full list below. Thank you to all of these businesses and organizations.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers that make 80/35 possible. Over 400 volunteers come together to help coordinate all aspects of the festival, ensuring that each year’s event is bigger and better than the previous. The 80/35 music festival is an event that has put Des Moines on the national music map, and will continue to support the community and its musicians. I look forward to seeing you all this weekend!

Justin H. Schoen
President
Greater Des Moines Music Coalition

Other pointers to help you make the most out of your 80/35 experience:

Utilize the mobile app: Plan your schedule, “star” your favorite artists, and much more. Make it easy for yourself to stay organized on the days of the festival—you wouldn’t want to accidentally miss something! Available for iOS and Android.

Stay hydrated: 80/35 brings the heat, and with a forecast of sunny skies ahead, you’re going to want to think ahead when it comes to hydration. Patrons are allowed to bring one factory sealed water bottle and one empty water bottle into the main stage area, so take advantage of this! There will be two FREE water-filling stations on the grounds, and Wellmark BCBS will provide free reusable water bottles to all festival attendees.

Take lots of photos: Each year 80/35 books some of the hottest up-and-coming acts of the year, many of which are sure to blow up over the coming months, so you’re going to want these pixilated memories to use for bragging rights. Not to mention, preserving your 80/35 memories so you can relive them over the next 365 days until the next 80/35.

Step outside your comfort zone: One great thing about 80/35 is that there are tons of awesome acts, but it’s not so spread out that you can’t see everything you want. That being said, make sure to check out the Independence Stage where all the local artists will be. Explore all the stages, for that matter. Go see an act you’ve never heard of– you might just find your next favorite band!

Block the sun: Sunscreen works, sure. And make sure to pack lots of that. Sunglasses are also key in any music festival setting. But think outside the box and consider wearing a hat for shade or taking a break from music in the shade, as smart ways to protect yourself from the sun as well.

Bring cash along: ATMs will be on site, but it’s always smart to keep cash handy. Dwolla is also a great tool, and festival-goers will be able to purchase admission and drink tickets through Dwolla.

Have a blast: Finally, the ultimate goal of any music festival is to have a wonderful time and experience amazing live music. Travel light with the necessities, and don’t forget your laid back attitude and dancin’ shoes.
