Evangelicals hail from Norman, Oklahoma and are on Dead Oceans record label, sharing space with Califone and Dirty Projectors. Their 2008 record “The Evening Descends” received a praiseworthy 8.3 out of 10 from Pitchfork. Josh Jones’ harmonious vocals play nicely with the lush keyboards, twinkling guitars and steady rhythm section. Reminiscent of older indie bands like Cap’n Jazz and Promise Ring, they also evoke early Cure comparisons but with an updated, modern twist. Consistent but never predictable live, Evangelicals promise to preach to the choir at 80/35.
