Civil Twilight

Originally hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, the three lifelong friends – brothers Steven and Andrew McKellar and Richard Wouters – who make up the Wind-up Records power trio Civil Twilight have been playing music together since they were teenagers, emulating the rock music they heard coming out of Europe and America, from Oasis, U2 and Nirvana to The Verve, The Police, Muse and Radiohead. The bandmates moved to Los Angeles in 2005; shortly thereafter, they signed with the indie label One October and co-produced their debut record, Human.

Currently based in Nashville, Twilight’s music was recently featured on a number of prime-time television shows in the U.S. and abroad, including One Tree Hill, House and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Twilight’s music is composed of impassioned vocals and stirring, alt-rock songcraft. While much of their inspiration comes from American and British artists, you can still hear a bit of Africa in Steve McKellar’s ambitious lyrics, their existential questioning and spiritual longing. The band’s name is a reflection on that in between time, not quite daylight, not quite darkness, but rather a shifting shade of gray.
