It’s finally upon us: Day one of the 2009 80/35

Day one of 80/35 is filled with great music – 17 different acts are scheduled to perform – here’s a rundown of the ones I’m going to make sure to see:

1. 7:30 p.m., Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks on the main stage: Although best known for his work with Pavement, Stephen Malkmus has meshed well with another band and put together some great songs on “Real Emotional Trash.” I expect they will draw heavily from that latest album in their lives show. Check out Bryon Dudley’s article for more on them. Read the preview from DMMC’s site.

2. 5:15 p.m., The Dig Angees on the west stage: This Des Moines-based group was a surprise favorite at April’s Gross Domestic Product, organized by the Des Moines Music Coalition. Their surf-rock sound is catchy and upbeat, and the medley of Beatles songs they performed at the end of their set was well-received. Mary Buck wrote a nice piece on them for the DMMC several weeks ago. Read the preview from DMMC’s site.

3. 9:30, Public Enemy on the main stage: Perhaps the most controversial pick to perform at the festival, it will be interesting to see whether these elder statesmen of rap and hip-hop can still bring a relevant message and a rocking show to their fans. Indications are Public Enemy is bringing a big crew with them for the gig, so we could be in for a wild show.
